The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.
The ex-president was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and handed more than a 27-year term in incarceration, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.
High Court Judge Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.
This encompassed attempting to break his electronic bracelet and a summons to a demonstration that could "allow for a possible escape.
Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears
In a document approving the custody, Justice Moraes said data from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the former leader's "intention to break the electronic ankle bracelet to guarantee victory in his escape.
This, it said, would be assisted by the confusion caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His son, Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a gathering of his followers near the former president's residence to take place on Saturday evening.
His son wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your phone there on your couch? I invite you to struggle with us."
He said the demonstration would be so followers could "pray for his physical condition and for the reestablishment of democratic governance in our nation."
Foreign Shelter Risks
Part of the magistrate's determination was the potential of Bolsonaro's "relocation to embassies near the residence, considering that the inquiries revealed a record of organizing to ask for protection through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The judicial paperwork underscores that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around approximately 13 kilometers from his dwelling.
Worldwide Consequences
Bolsonaro's legal woes have generated frustration from fellow populist conservative American leader Trump, leading him to impose a half-rate duty on imports of Brazilian goods.
Bolsonaro is being kept in a national police facility in Brasilia and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on the following day.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on the previous day that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the High Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under home confinement, with electronic monitoring.
They also requested that he be allowed to depart his residence for medical care, saying he required frequent medical attention for pulmonary infections and other health problems.
Details of Guilty Verdict
He was convicted of orchestrating a conspiracy aimed at keeping him in power after he failed to win the national vote to his left-wing rival, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.
Supreme Court justices said that he knew of a scheme which included plans to kill Lula and his VP candidate, his vice-presidential candidate, and to detain and kill Alexandre de Moraes - the High Court judge who has been presiding over his judicial proceedings.
The scheme was stopped because it couldn't obtain the backing of the army and air force commanders. Lula was sworn in without incident on 1 January 2023.
But a week later, on 8 January, numerous his followers attacked and damaged public facilities in the capital, Brazil's capital.
The law enforcement took action and around 1,500 people were taken into custody.
The justices found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the national armed forces to step in, bring back stability and return him to office.
At the moment, the legal team called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.
He was also banned from seeking elected position until twenty-sixty - eight years later after the end of his sentence.
The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him running in the next presidential race.
