Around 50 vehicles have been covered with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau close to Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, exterior walls and postboxes were defaced, occasionally with prohibited symbols, they announced in a statement.
Officers state they were notified in the late hours on Wednesday, when a resident observed that a car in the Lamboy neighborhood of Hanau had been smeared with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been applied in the pattern of a swastika, they reported.
Police then located numerous other marked cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
These symbols are illegal in Germany under laws prohibiting the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Officials say early analysis show the substance was probably human blood.
"There is still no clue as to its origin; officials are presently not aware of any injuries in relation with the occurrence," they stated.
Municipal representatives said they were attempting "to unravel the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
A high-ranking official said the attack left him speechless and required to be addressed promptly.
"This act hits the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the right-wing attack half a decade ago," he wrote on online, mentioning the murder of nine victims by a gunman focusing on residents of foreign heritage in February 2020.
