The pace bowler has secured over 300 dismissals in 71 appearances with an average of 22.10.
The Australian chief selector the selector has confirmed that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's Ashes series.
There were concerns that the veteran bowler might miss the series due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.
Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series scheduled to begin on the 21st of November in the WACA.
The selector shared that Cummins is "building up" and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.
"We're aware that time is getting short and various factors at play, not only the back issue, but other factors as well," he commented.
"We're encouraged. We firmly believe that he'll participate in a major part. Ideally it's the first Test. Should that not happen, we'll reassess."
Past Concerns
Cummins was ruled out the ODI and T20 games against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals recently after scans revealed a lower back issue.
Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a short span.
The bowler mentioned he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the series.
The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.
Contingency Plans
Should Cummins not be fit, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.
All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from the national team for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of discomfort in his torso.
He labeled it as a "slight concern and confirmed that he'll feature in the state-level matches, so will be "in a good place to resume bowling."
"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to take part for the first Test as an all-rounder," the selector detailed.
"He was only going to play the initial matches anyway. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for a short period, we opted to approach this more conservatively."
