Trumpism's most telling and characteristic instances – not its most significant, nor cruelest, nor most threatening, nor stupidest, but perhaps its most illuminating – occurred earlier this fall. Over the span of multiple weeks, the US president commenced revealing the public his plans for an ornate dance hall twice the size compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the eastern section to build it.
He has performed deeds countless times more severe – the present calculation of fatalities from his cuts to USAID amounts to 600,000 and rising, and recently research projected his energy policies would cause deaths 1.3 million more. Yet nothing as characteristic. No other president would have attempted – truly, no other president would have contemplated – solo demolishing large sections of the White House to construct a royal-themed celebration hall, with the active collaboration of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.
We transitioned from 'the humble will receive the world' to 'the gentle will succumb to cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the chief executive try to upend the traditional concept about democracy and replace it with its direct contrary, there is one large group of Americans who wouldn't consider it entirely new. This includes individuals like us – among senior generations close to half – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have witnessed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches converted the Savior we were raised with into the total contrary of our understanding of him. Essentially, they transformed an image of compassion into a figure of hostility who blesses specifically the brutality that he criticized in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades instead of months, yet it remains disturbing in the same ways, a disorienting gut punch for countless people.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, as conceptually Christ is the focus within Christian belief, and since the quickly increasing segment of Americans might have little sense regarding him as they consider themselves non-believers or doubters or spiritual independents. I take no issue with these different approaches, nor with any other faith; yet I maintain that exist valuable insights of substantial value in biblical accounts.
It is decidedly definitely not the story of a mighty king arising; rather, a baby is born to parents without shelter in a storage space, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid covert authorities. The child matures in humble circumstances, a working carpenter; his message focuses on affection for others, specifically for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to hostility is to turn the opposite cheek – not as an act of submissive tolerance, but as a means to instruct the assailant; his approach to wrongdoing states that when a person pilfers your coat you ought to provide them your pullover as well.
The apparent and direct fact that the Savior in biblical accounts requests a form of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the masses, but because of its intrinsic extremism needing to be restrained. During the 1950s it was controlled by dilution – The Protestant faith was so widespread that it practically sanctified existing conditions.
A Battle for the Best of Us
Hence I have become inspired to witness the determined opposition to Trump develop over the last twelve months. It has served as significant comfort to assist in constructing the movement that has protested openly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged citizens to show up in large quantities during minor elections. We shall require to continue it, and with identical determination, with American flags during all protests and requests to the highest qualities of American history.
We will be questioned ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you welcome them and embrace them or not?
The country is optimally secured, in other words, by reference to the finest in US heritage, similar to Christianity is most protected by relationship to what makes it special and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In neither case does it imply feigning the most negative about the nation and Christianity did not happen; it means both meekness and belief, a mixture that committed American Christians should embrace.
